API Account vs. Subscription: What Actually Powers Your AI Employee (India, 2026)

A SuperGrok or ChatGPT Plus subscription doesn't include API access — and API access is what actually runs an AI employee. Here's who pays for what, what the API itself costs, and what Vardhan AI charges to build and manage it.

"Just get a SuperGrok subscription and the bot is sorted" is the single most common misunderstanding we hear from business owners trying to set up their first AI employee. A consumer AI subscription and the API that actually powers an automated bot are two completely separate products, billed separately, with zero crossover — here's who pays for what, what the API itself costs, and what it takes to turn an API key into a working employee.

Subscription and API Are Two Different Bills

xAI is explicit about this: a SuperGrok plan does not include API tokens, and API credits do not unlock SuperGrok features. X Premium+ ($40/month, roughly ₹3,800, includes SuperGrok access and Grok's in-app bot) and SuperGrok Heavy (up to $300/month, roughly ₹28,500, for individuals) pay for using Grok in the app, on grok.com, or on X — not for calling Grok from a WhatsApp number, a website chat widget, or an Instagram DM automation. Calling Grok from your own code goes through a separate, pay-as-you-go API account at console.x.ai, billed per token, no subscription required.

This split isn't unique to Grok — ChatGPT Plus doesn't include OpenAI API credits, and Claude Pro doesn't include Anthropic API access either. Every major provider keeps "chat with the assistant yourself" and "build something that calls the model programmatically" on separate bills.

What the API Itself Actually Costs

xAI's current flagship model, Grok 4.6, is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens on the pay-as-you-go API (as of August 2026 — these rates move, so we re-check before quoting a client). A faster, cheaper tier (Grok 4 Fast) runs $0.20 input / $0.50 output per million tokens for simpler tasks that don't need the flagship model's reasoning.

A single real conversation — a lead asking about pricing, availability, and next steps — typically runs a few thousand tokens end to end. At flagship rates that's a fraction of a rupee per conversation; even a few hundred conversations a month usually lands in the low hundreds to low thousands of rupees. Where this adds up is volume and model choice, not any one exchange — see our full India pricing guide for how that scales across tiers, since a deeply integrated system with multiple tool calls per turn costs meaningfully more per conversation than a simple Q&A bot.

An API Key Alone Doesn't Run Anything

Opening an API account gets you a billing relationship with the model provider — it doesn't get you a bot. Someone still has to build and keep running:

  • The actual connector — a WhatsApp Business number, an Instagram DM webhook, a website chat widget — wired to the model, since the model has no inbox of its own
  • The prompts and guardrails that decide what the bot is allowed to say, offer, or promise on your behalf
  • A handoff path for anything it can't or shouldn't resolve alone, so a confused conversation reaches a human instead of looping
  • Ongoing monitoring — catching when the model changes behaviour, when a new type of question keeps slipping through, or when usage spikes push the monthly API bill higher than expected

This is the actual work in "setting up an AI employee" — the API account itself is a five-minute signup.

What This Costs at Vardhan AI

We set this up with the client holding their own API account — you're billed directly by the provider for usage, at provider rates, with no markup from us sitting on top of every token. We charge for the build and the ongoing management, not for reselling tokens. A first AI Employee — typically the inbound WhatsApp sales line — starts at ₹25,000 setup + ₹7,500/month for up to 300 conversations, the same structure as our WhatsApp AI Sales Employee.

Once that first integration is live, each additional role — Support, Ops, Marketing, HR, or a second channel like Instagram — runs ₹15,000-20,000/month, since the API account and the underlying connector work are already in place. A business running five roles this way typically lands around ₹25,000 setup plus ₹70,000-85,000/month in management fees, on top of their own API usage bill — which, per the numbers above, is usually the smaller line item unless volume is genuinely high.

[ FAQ ]Frequently asked

Frequently asked.

No. Consumer subscriptions (SuperGrok, X Premium+, ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro) pay for using the assistant yourself in its own app. Calling the model from your own code — which is what a WhatsApp, Instagram, or website bot actually does — requires a separate, usage-billed API account.

Your API account should be billed directly to you at provider rates. That way there's no markup sitting on every token you use, and you're never locked in — if you switch who manages the integration, the account and its usage history stay yours.

Usually the smaller part of the bill. Grok's flagship model runs $2/million input tokens and $6/million output tokens — a few hundred typical conversations a month lands in the low hundreds to low thousands of rupees, before any setup or management fee.

The API account is a billing relationship, not a bot. The setup fee covers building the actual connector (WhatsApp/Instagram/website), writing the prompts and guardrails, and setting up the human handoff path — the part that takes real work.

At Vardhan AI, the first role is ₹25,000 setup + ₹7,500/month; each additional role runs ₹15,000-20,000/month since the account and base integration are already built. Five roles typically lands around ₹70,000-85,000/month in management fees, plus your own usage-billed API cost.

Yes — the same subscription-vs-API split holds for OpenAI (ChatGPT Plus vs. the OpenAI API) and Anthropic (Claude Pro vs. the Anthropic API). The provider changes; the billing structure doesn't.
